Over the last month we’ve had the pleasure of watching Spring unfold throughout the farm. It’s our third year living on the land, and yet around this time each year we find ourselves gawking at each new leaf on the trees, amazed yet again at nature’s ability to spring back to life. One of our favorite aspects of living in North Carolina is the ability to truly enjoy four distinct seasons. What a gift to find that the same view you see every morning, can look entirely different depending on the season we’re in.

During the winter months, the land feels calm, and our views expansive. In spring, after months of quietness, the land appears to rush back to life in a matter of weeks, and with it a sense of hurry. Hurried to finish up those lingering winter projects, and the mad dash farmers know all too well- to seed and transplant a season’s worth of crops. As the years pass we’re becoming more attuned to the rythms of each season, albeit we still haven’t mastered the art of a calm spring. Fortunately, moments of calm manage to find us, even when we least expect them. Like this morning, standing beside a hedgerow of blooming comfrey, buzzing with native honey bees.
Over the years, we’ve come to realize that nature has a way of offering exactly what we need, just when we need it. An antidote, in a sense, for whatever season we’re in. Just as spring rushed in with it’s to-do lists and fleeting storms, so did the leaves unfurl, narrowing our view like a giant hug as if to say- stay focused, you’ve got this friend.
